2 BLACK, 2 BEAUTIFUL

Early Spring, I visited the Black Index and Black American Beauty Volume 1 exhibits. Both are small, powerful exhibits. It's quality over quantity. The artists featured in the Black Index at Hunter College are Dennis Delgado, Alicia Henry, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Titus Kaphar, Whitfield Lovell and Lava Thomas. These artists build upon the tradition of Black self-representation using drawing, performance, printmaking, sculpture, and digital technology. These artists question the reliance on photography as a privileged source for documentary objectivity and understanding. The American Black Beauty Vol.1 exhibition at the SN37 Gallery by photographer & filmmaker Micaiah Carter is fine art, fashion, family and everything in between. Carter's photography features Black men and women, drawing attention to the void in representation on both sides of the camera.
